Journal Posting #1: Schedule and Role

My field experience placement is at Neeskara Elementary in an early childhood self-contained classroom for children who are deaf/hard of hearing. Neeskara is an auditory/oral school that provides speech and auditory training for all DHH students. There is a mix of 3K and 4K students in my room and there are 9 students total. The 3K students leave at 10:45am, and 4K students stay all day.

I will be there every Monday and Wednesday from 7:30am-11:30am, and some Tuesday mornings throughout the semester. I will be observing and eventually leading the morning greeting circle, read aloud, and literacy skills. I will also observe the language experience on some Tuesdays.

Here is the full daily schedule for this classroom: https://docs.google.com/document/d/10jAHznXZUWICfGjZEy53PfLuyW7wqhyYrZbA5Uqs8Uo/edit?usp=sharing

  1. You've got it right! I look forward to working with you this semester, and I'm so glad you'll be able to observe the language experience as it is what my literacy lessons are often centered around!

  2. I think this schedule is a great fit for learning about a main component of supporting deaf and hard of hearing students in the classroom...language and literacy! Those are key building blocks with our students (with any student!) and I'm hopeful that you will build up your skill set and comfort level in supporting DHH kiddos in these two areas while you are at UWM and working with Lisa. This age is CRUCIAL in providing support and helping them start of on a positive educational career!

Looking forward to seeing all of your work throughout the semester!
