Journal Posting 2: My Students

My placement at Neeskara Elementary school is a self-contained early childhood classroom for deaf/hard of hearing students. I have a total of nine students between the ages of 3 and 4. My students are all hard of hearing and they use assistive technology as they develop listening and spoken language skills. The D/HH program at Neeskara is auditory/oral, which means that the students learn to listen and to communicate with their voices, without any sign language.

From what I have seen so far, the range of communication skills among these students is wide: some students communicate very well as they interact with their teachers and peers, whereas others do not use their voices unless prompted by a teacher, and even then it is only single or 3-5 word utterances. All of the children receive speech therapy from a speech and language pathologist, as well as auditory/oral therapy from Ms. Schnell. This classroom is early childhood, so the main literacy focus is language acquisition.

This school is located in the city of Milwaukee, and my students observe American holidays and traditions. Four of my students are African American, three are Hispanic, and one is Hmong. This classroom and school are very ethnically diverse! All of my students speak English, but a few have parents who are bilingual and speak Spanish as well.

I am attaching two documents that give a snapshot of each of my students: a student profile for each student and an "IEP at a glance" table.
