Journal Posting #3: Lesson Planning

My lesson took place on October 4th, and it was a greeting circle. This is a daily routine that exposes the students to many different components of language and conversation. I led the greeting circle exactly as my cooperating teacher does in order to keep them in their routine, and to continue giving them the predictability and repetition that is necessary at this age.

How do you feel the planning and preparation process went for you?
The planning process went smoothly because I had already observed and participated in the greeting circle routine. I enjoyed writing it out in the lesson plan form because it helped me see how beneficial the greeting circle is for practicing language and literacy.

What could you have done differently (or eliminated) in the plan/prep process to make the lesson more beneficial?
I think I could have planned my assessment a little better. At first, I didn't have my checklist beside me so I wasn't recording the responses of the first few children. Ms. Schnell had to remind me that I could have the checklist beside me, recording as I went along. I also was a little unsure of my assessment criteria as we were singing the song because I would ask myself, "did they get it or not?"

What did you neglect in the plan/prep process that you feel you should add in next time to help the lesson flow more smoothly?
I could have practiced the greeting circle song, "higgledy wiggledy." I kept forgetting the words to the song!
